Appearance: 

Large, dignified dog covered in long silky and very fine hair.


Color: 

All colors are acceptable but white markings, especially in the head area are not desirable.


Grooming: 
Requires a great deal of grooming to maintain their elegant appearance. Requires daily brushing and regular bathing. However, Afghans are not excessive shedders.

Temperament: 

Dignified, devoted and independent. The Afghan Hound needs daily exercise and is not suited to apartment living. As a sight hound, the Afghan has a high prey drive and is not as obedient as other breeds. Athletic and outgoing.


Lifespan: 
12-13 years

History: 

Originated in Afghanistan where they were bred as hunting and herding dogs. Strong, quick and keen eyesight made them prized livestock and companions.


Health Concerns: 

Allergies, cancer and sensitivity to anesthesia.
