Appearance: 

Small, compact little dogs with a medium length harsh double coat. Fur is shorter on the feet and muzzle and there is a pronounced ruff around the neck. They have small pointed ears, usually docked tails and have a lively, energetic appearance.


Color: 

Blue and tan, solid sandy or solid red.


Grooming: 
Very little grooming required.

Temperament: 

Hardworking, strong and very loving little dogs. Make great little watch dogs and are highly trainable because of their intelligence. However, in general the male Australian Terrier does not get along well with other male dogs.


Lifespan: 
12 years

History: 

Descended from rough coated terriers in Australia in the 1800's that were brought over from Great Britain. Originally, the Australian Terrier was used as to hunt mice and rats in the house and on the farm.


Health Concerns: 

Generally free of genetic disorders. Can develop tumors or diabetes.
