Appearance: 

Short legged and heavy-boned with long ears and a long muzzle. Their eyes are sunken and give them a sad appearance.


Color: 

Any color. Typically white with patterns of brown.


Grooming: 
Very little grooming required.

Temperament: 

Easygoing and laid back. Basset Hounds are "pack" dogs and enjoy being in the middle of whatever is going on. Loving and great with children but occasionally stubborn. As a scent hound they must be kept on a leash unless they are in a fenced in area. Second only to the Bloodhound in its ability to trail and follow a scent.

12 years

History: 

Originated from France as hunting dogs. They arrived in England in the 1860's and made their way to America.


Health Concerns: 

Ear infections due to their long, droopy ears, eye infections and yeast infections in the folds of skin around their mouth.
