Appearance: 

A large, heavy-boned dog characterized by its unique tricolor markings and long silky coat. They have broad heads, low hanging ears and a low hanging tail.


Color: 

Jet black with rust and clear white markings.


Grooming: 
High level of grooming required. Dense double coat needs brushed regularly.

Temperament: 

Sweet, patient, loving, good with children, stable and eager to please. However, they are slow to mature and act like "puppies" for up to age 2 years of age. Although they do not need vigorous exercise they are better suited to a larger home and yard.


Lifespan: 
8 years

History: 

Originated in the Swiss state of Berne where they were bred to work on the farm, pull carts and protect livestock and property. They are one of the four standard Swiss Mountain Dogs.


Health Concerns: 

Elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, eye problems and cancer.
