Appearance: 

Large, strong, big boned dogs covered in a thick black double coat. They have thick, bearded muzzles, oval eyes and triangular ears that hang against the head. The tail is thick and usually docked.

High level of grooming required to maintain appearance.

Temperament: 

Watchful and naturally protective dog that forms very close bonds with family members. They need daily exercise but can do well in small dwellings if given daily exercise and mental stimulation. Intelligent, athletic and courageous.


Lifespan: 
12 years

History: 

Originated in the Soviet Union by breeding the Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Newfoundland and Airedale. Originally bred for protection and to use as a police guard dog.


Health Concerns: 

Generally free of genetic disorders, may develop hip dysplasia.
