Appearance: 

Very large, strong, big boned dogs covered in loose skin with short dense hair. They have long droopy eyes, long ears and folds of skin that hang. The muzzle is broad and long and the tail is thick and erect.


Color: 

Black and tan, liver and tan or red.


Grooming: 
Very little grooming required. However, special care must be taken to keep the ears clean.

Temperament: 

Very affectionate, easygoing, mild mannered dogs that usually get along with other animals and pets. They must be kept in a fenced in area or on a leash as they will quickly wander off on a scent and have been known to trail a scent for days. They are patient and make great family dogs and don't require a lot of exercise for their size.


Lifespan: 
12 years

History: 

One of the most ancient breeds that appeared in Europe thousands of years ago. Originally bred to be hunting and trailing dogs with a great deal of endurance and stamina.


Health Concerns: 

Eye and ear infections and hip dysplasia.
