Appearance: 

Large, well-muscled, square-framed dog with a rugged appearance. The head is large, impressive and accented by a beard and mustache. The ears and tail are usually cropped. They have a thick double coat that is curly and harsh.

Fawn to black, salt and pepper, grey and brindle.


Grooming: 
High level of grooming required to maintain appearance.

Temperament: 

Gentle, loyal and naturally protective. They make great family companions. Highly trainable and eager to please. They are fearless, yet rational.


Lifespan: 
12 years

History: 

Originated in the country land between France and the Netherlands. They were bred to herd and protect livestock and to pull carts. They were used during both World Wars as couriers and as hunters.


Health Concerns: 

Generally free of genetic disorders, may develop hip dysplasia.
