Appearance: 

Large muscular dogs covered in long, coarse hair. The head is large, rectangular and covered in long hair. The ears are set high, erect and covered in long hair. The muzzle is square and short and the eyes are large and peaceful. The tail is feathered, carried low and in the shape of a "j".


Color: 

Any color except white.


Grooming: 
High level of grooming required to maintain appearance.

Temperament: 

Gentle, hard-working, loyal and highly trainable. They have protective instincts and form strong bonds with family members. They make great family companions. They do require a good deal of exercise and mental stimulation.


Lifespan: 
12 years

History: 

Originated in France hundreds of years ago as hunters and herders. They were used as couriers and guard dogs during both World Wars. They are still used today as working farm dogs.


Health Concerns: 

Generally free of genetic disorders, may develop hip dysplasia and/or eye problems.
