Appearance: 

Small, sturdy, alert dog with an almost human like expression. The head is round, with a beard and the eyes are dark and set deeply apart. The ears are set high and alert, along with the tail which is usually docked. The coat is either rough or smooth.


Color: 

Red, beige, black and tan, or black.


Grooming: 
Very little grooming required.

Temperament: 

Alert, sensitive and fearless. Usually bond with one person in the family. Very loving and loyal. They do well in smaller dwellings and get along well with other animals.


Lifespan: 
15 years

History: 

Originated in Belgium in the 19th Century to help coachman keep rats out of the stables.


Health Concerns: 

Respiratory problems, eye problems and issues with birthing.
