Short, stocky dogs with wide frames and wide spread legs that give them a unique "waddle" when they walk. The head is wide and thick with folds of skin surrounding their face and short muzzle. An underbite is typical. The ears are small and thin and set high on the head. The tail is thin, short and typically "screwed" in shape.

Loving, affectionate, playful and easy to train. However, they can be very stubborn. They do like to chew on things and should be provided ample toys and chews. They form strong bonds with family members and are generally very good with children and other pets. They do well in small dwellings.
Originated in England in the 17th Century and used for bull baiting. When the sport became outlawed the breed was bred for temperament and quickly became a favorite family pet.
