Appearance: 

Medium-sized, powerfully-built retrieving dog with amber eyes and a distinct curly coat of protective hair. The head is broad and round and the muzzle is long and broad, able to carry game with a tender hold. The ears are small, sit high on the head and hang loosely. The tail is of medium length, carried in an erect position, but never curling over the back. They have webbed paws for retrieving game from the water, snow, ice or wetland.


Color: 

Any color of brown, sage or deadgrass.


Grooming: 
Minimal grooming required. Regular bathing and brushing required.

Temperament: 

A no-nonsense working retriever that is mild-mannered and intelligent. They form strong bonds with family members and are naturally protective. They were bred to work outdoors and need daily outdoor exercise and mental stimulation.


Lifespan: 
12 years

History: 

Originated off the coast of Maryland in the 1800's to retrieve fowl from the icy waters and frigid conditions.


Health Concerns: 

Generally free of genetic disorders. May develop hip dysplasia and eye problems.
