Appearance: 

Small, delicate-looking dogs that are surprisingly sturdy and athletic. The body is slightly longer than it is tall with an apple shaped head, large dark eyes and a short defined muzzle. The ears are large and stand erect at the top of the head. The tail is thick at the base and tapering to the end, carried erect and never curling over the back. Coats come in either smooth or long.

Grooming: 
Very little grooming required.

Temperament: 

Feisty, loving, brave, intelligent little dogs that have no concept of their size as compared to larger breeds. They are true companions and love to be near people all the time. Not usually good with smaller children.


Lifespan: 
17 years

History: 

Originated in Mexico in the 1800's. Named after the Mexican State of Chihuahua. They were used in religious ceremonies and served as pets to the wealthy.


Health Concerns: 

Hypoglycemia, joint problems, bronchitis and eye problems.
