Appearance: 

Large, big-boned and muscular with a shiny and somewhat wavy coat. They have big rounded heads with long muzzles. Their thin ears hang close to the head and are low set. Their eyes are oval and fair sized. The tail is carried horizontally and is of medium size.


Color: 

Black with tan markings. Maybe a small white spot on the chest.


Grooming: 
Minimal amount of grooming required.

Temperament: 

Patient, intelligent and active. They will let you know if they need something. Friendly. They are reserved around strangers and are loving towards children. They are curious and have a hunting instinct. Requires daily physical stimulation and will need a fenced in area or lead. They will wander if unsupervised. They are slow to mature but learn quickly.


Lifespan: 
12 years

History: 

Originated in 17th century Scotland and were made famous by the fourth Duke of Gordon. Became the largest of the setters. Became popular show dogs after coming to the U.S.


Health Concerns: 

Hip dysplasia, cataracts, hypothyroidism and are prone to bloating.
