Appearance: 

Large, muscular bodies with a short coat. Longer than they are tall. The eyes are almond-shaped and brown. Their ears are high-set and triangular, they are erect when alert and hang close to the face when not. Their muzzle is large and blunt.


Color: 

The topcoat is black with white and rust markings.


Grooming: 
Regular brushing. Shed in spring and summer.

Temperament: 

Is a good family dog and a good watchdog. Gets along with everyone in the family. Apprehensive towards strangers. Requires daily exercise.


Lifespan: 
12 years

History: 

Originated in Switzerland as a farm dog. The number of these dropped and were restored by breeders in the 19th century.


Health Concerns: 

Hip dysplasia, panosteitis, shoulder osteochondritis dissecans, distichiatis, gastric torsion, splenic torsion and seizures.
