Appearance: 

Large strongly-built dogs covered in short, curly, water resistant coats. The head is chiseled with a long, somewhat square muzzle. Their eyes are small and almond-sized. They have long ears, with long curly hair, that hang close to the head. The coat is made up of dense curls.


Color: 

Liver to dark liver with hints of purple. (Puce liver)


Grooming: 
High level of grooming required to maintain appearance. A non-shedding breed.

Temperament: 

They are intelligent and fast-learning. They need proper training and socialization when young. They are shy around strangers but do well with people. They are loyal pets and are lovable. They like to swim and be in water.


Lifespan: 
12 years

History: 

Origin of the breed is unknown. The breed was recognized by Justin McCarthy. The breed is ancient but the modern breed was discovered in Ireland in the 1830's.


Health Concerns: 

Hip dysplasia, otitis externa, distichiasis.
