Small and square with long, bushy, thick coats. They have a mane around the neck. Their heads are wedge-shaped and erect triangle-shaped ears which are mounted high on the head. Eyes are almond-shaped and of medium size. Their tails are long and well-feathered and are tightly curled over the back. They are high set and should lie flat and close to the body.
Mixture of grey, black and cream. They are intensely marked.
They are mellow, fun and energetic. They are good with children and other pets. They are extremely alert and make good watchdogs. They have an understanding of human emotion and will react to it. They need daily exercise and would do better with larger fenced in areas. Prefer cooler climates and need accommodations on hot days. They are quick learners and will do well in obedience and agility. They also make good guide dogs.
They come from Arctic stock. Worked along the Rhine River. They lost popularity during the Dutch rebellion in the 18th century but regained it.
A healthy breed but can develop hip dysplasia and heart and eye disorders.
