Medium-sized and strong. They have short, straight, thick outer coat that feels hard with a downy undercoat. The ears are low on the skull and hang close the head. Their eyes are of medium size and are set well apart. They have a thick nose and wide muzzle. The tail is straight, otter-like, thick at the base, tapered to the end and carried straight and never curling over the back.
Solid black, yellow or chocolate.
They love people and they love the attention. They love exercise and can go stir crazy without it. They require daily physical/mental stimulation as well as proper food portions. They tend to gain weight quickly. They are gentle and great with children and other pets. They are patient, obedient and friendly around strangers. They have a natural curiosity and will wander. Require fenced in area or a lead.
Originated in 18th century in Canada. The current name was given in 1887 by the Earl of Malmesbury.
Can develop hip and elbow dysplasia, ear infections and eye disorders. Are prone to obesity.
