Appearance: 

Small and muscular with a smooth, hard and straight coat that covers the body uniformly. The head is tapered and narrow with a strong muzzle. The eyes are slightly oval and the ears are set high and are erect. They can be cropped or uncropped. They have erect tails and straight legs.


Color: 

Solid red, stag red, black with rust red marking and black pencil stripes on toes or chocolate with rust red marking and brown pencil stripes on toes.

Minimal grooming

Temperament: 

Lively and curious. They are great protectors and can be defensive. They get along well with children except may have a problem with smaller children and children who tease. They need daily exercise and a fenced in area because they can escape rather easily. They like to play but will bite if handled to roughly.


Lifespan: 
over 15 years

History: 

Originated in Germany. Bred to help farmers get rid of rats. Their current name was given to them in 1972.


Health Concerns: 

Eye problems and joint issues.
