Small square frames with a double coat with upper coat being hard and wiry and the under coat being close. Their heads are rectangular and long with bushy beards, mustaches and eye brows. They have small, deep set, oval eyes. When ears are cropped they have pointed tips. When the ears are uncropped they are small, v-shaped and hang close to the head. The tails are carried high and are sometimes docked.
Solid black, salt and pepper, black and silver.
They are child-like and playful. They are territorial and fearless. They will bark instead of attack but they have a high prey drive. They go stir crazy and need daily physical stimulation. They make great family companions and generally get along well with children and pets.
Originated in 19th century Germany to be used as ratters. Started breeding in the U.S. in 1925.
