Appearance: 

Large and big-boned. They have large heads and smooth faces. Their eyes are small and are set wide apart. The ears are small and triangular with rounded tips that hang close to the head. They have double coats that are flat. The upper coat is coarse, long and straight or wavy. The under coat is soft and dense. The tail hangs down or curves slightly.


Color: 

Solid black, grey, brown or black and white.


Grooming: 
Regular grooming and brushing. Heavy shedders and droolers.

Temperament: 

Sweet and gentle giants. They are great with children and friendly towards strangers. They are very laid back and patient. They are outdoorsy and like to swim. They don't do well with small houses and spaces. They are not the best guard dogs but they are known to rescue families from dangerous situations. Require daily exercise.


Lifespan: 
10 to 15 years

History: 

Originated in Canada to help fishermen. Made their way to Europe and America and became popular show and working dogs.


Health Concerns: 

Hip dysplasia, heart disease and are prone to bloating.
