Appearance: 

Large and muscular frames. The coat is short, dense and glossy. The skull is flat and has a long muzzle. Their eyes are set well apart and are round. The ears set high and wide at the base and taper to a rounded tip. They are carried close to the head. The tail hangs low and curls up slightly.


Color: 

Light wheaten to red wheaten with a little white on the chest.


Grooming: 
Regular brushing. Heavy shedders.

Temperament: 

Mellow, energetic and gentle. They are great with children and reserved around strangers. They make good watchdogs. They are protective and alert. They are very athletic and need daily exercise. They have a high hunting instinct and need a controlled area. They have a ridge of hair along their back running the opposite direction of the rest of their coat.


Lifespan: 
10 to 12 years

History: 

They originated in 16th century South Africa. They were used to hunt especially lions. They have just recently become a popular breed in the U.S.


Health Concerns: 

Hip dysplasia and eye problems.
