Appearance: 

Large and muscular frames. The coat is short and dense and the tail is bushy. The head is square with short muzzles. The eyes are set in the front and are of medium size. The ears are medium-sized and hang close to the head. Their feet are large and they have long tails.


Color: 

Various shades of red with white or brindle patches with white markings.


Grooming: 
Daily brushing. Heavy shedders.

Temperament: 

Sweet, friendly and wise. They are mellow and are good with children. They like to play outside even the snow. They need daily exercise and don't like the hot weather. Needs proper training and socialization because of their size. They are protective and make good watchdogs.


Lifespan: 
8 to 10 years

History: 

Originated in the Swiss Alps in 100 A.D. They made great rescue dogs and were used as such.


Health Concerns: 

Heart, hip and shoulder problems and ectropion.
