Appearance: 

Small, sturdy, squarely-built dogs covered in long harsh coats that grow in different lengths around the body. The head is wedge-shaped with a short, tapered muzzle. The eyes are small and dark. The ears are small, triangular, set high on the head and erect. The tail is usually docked or carried over the back.

Black.


Grooming: 
Regular grooming required. Heavy shedder.

Temperament: 

Intelligent, lively, energetic and hard-working dogs. They are easy to train and eager to please. The are patient and get along well with children and other pets. They make great family companions. Watchful and naturally protective. Require regular physical and mental stimulation.


Lifespan: 
15 years

History: 

Originally bred by Belgian boat captains to use on the boats to hunt rats. They were called "little skippers". They were also used as guard dogs.


Health Concerns: 

Hip dysplasia, epilepsy and eye problems.
